This superb Yam mask originates with the Abelam people, along the Sepik river, in western Papua New Guinea. Dating back to the 1930’s, it was used to dress a big yam during the yam harvest closing ceremonies. It is sculpted in wood and decorated with paintings that have been renewed on each new occasion.
